Being an Explorer

Explorers are a go-getting group of young people aged 14 to 18.

Together, they make up the fifth section of the Scouts. Every week, they gather in groups called Units to develop independence, confidence and leadership skills to equip them for the future.

What do Explorers get up to?

Not sure if you have time to fit Explorers into your week? Being a person is busy work, and being a teenage person is even busier. We get it. That’s why Explorer Units are generally more flexible than the other Scout sections, especially when important landmarks like exams roll around.
Although usually we meet weekly, this isn’t always the case – sometimes we meet less frequently, or run activities on the weekend so that you can keep your weeknights free for other things.

Discovering the world

Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and deciding which direction to take. Meetings are increasingly youth-led. You choose your activities and adventures to create a programme that suits you.

Alongside your new friends, you’ll master the skills that will make you feel stronger and happier in the long run, and try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.

Whether you’re hiking to faraway lands or building a robot in your local town hall, you’ll have the freedom to choose what you’d like to do, and work together with adults to make it happen.

Starting small, thinking big

Explorers start small but think big. They stand up for what they believe and make a difference to their own communities and beyond, confident in the knowledge that their daily actions add up. They choose the causes they would like to support and make decisions on how best to help and what is important to them.

As part of the Young Leaders Scheme, we offer the opportunity to pass on your knowledge and work with our younger Scouting sections. What could be more rewarding than sharing your skills and expertise with those eager to follow in your footsteps? It makes a fantastic addition to your CV and can even count towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Listening in, lending a hand

Explorers seek out the answers to the big questions, and to the smaller questions that don’t seem to matter but really should. Most importantly, they say yes more often than they say no - whether they’re overcoming their fears, tackling a challenge head on or signing up for their first major hike across Europe. Explorers challenge themselves and work as a team, seeking adventures they never thought possible.

Sound like fun? That’s because it is. All that’s missing is you.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) is an awards programme which gives young people the chance to make friends, have fun and build confidence in an empowering, exciting and non-competitive learning environment. At Titans Explorers, we offer access to the DofE Award programme.

What Explorers wear?

Once they’ve had time to settle in to the group, Explorers get their own set of uniform to wear during meetings and on trips away. This consists of a beige shirt or blouse with their badges sewn on, which they pair with a yellow and black scarf or 'necker’ to represent Cannock Chase District Explorers.

Alongside their shirts, Explorers wear navy blue uniform trousers or school trousers. For some activities, jogging bottoms or leggings may be appropriate - your leaders will advise on this. No jeans please.

Optional accessories such as hats, hoodies, are also available.

Why is uniform important?

Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means you can run around and get messy without ruining your other clothes. It makes you feel part of a team. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out. And it gives you a place to show off all the brilliant badges you earn.

Where you can buy the uniform

Uniform can either be bought from our online shop - Scout Store - or from Crested Schoolwear in Cannock. If you’re stuck, ask adult volunteers to tell you more about what to buy and where to buy it. If cost is an issue, they will be more than happy to help.
